The gardens were originally designed by Catherine de Medici to go with her Tuileries Palace. The Jardin des Tuileries was initially an Italian-style garden, but was later re-landscaped by the gardener Le Nôtre, under orders from Colbert. It was at this point that the gardens took their current shape, with their ornamental basins, sculptures, wide alleyways and raised areas to the north and south.
The garden, which separates the Louvre from Place de la Concorde, is the perfect place to stretch your legs and enjoy a wealth of Parisian cultural heritage with statues by Maillol, Rodin and Giacometti.
After the Jardin des Tuileries on the right bank, why not visit the Jardin du Luxembourg on the left bank? Take a stroll or hop on the bus to get to this park, which is home to the French Senate and the Luxembourg museum.
Located between Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter, the park was inspired by the Boboli Gardens in Florence. Its construction was ordered by Marie de Medici in 1612, who was seeking a refuge from the chaos of the court (which was then at the Louvre). The 25 hectare Jardin du Luxembourg is divided into a French garden section and an English garden section. Play chess, bridge, tennis, admire the works on display on the outer fence, or simply sit in a chair and take in the luscious surroundings.
If you're in Paris on a romantic getaway, don't miss the Pont des Arts (15 minutes' walk from our hotel), stretching between the Institut de France and the Louvre. Also known as Passerelle des Arts, this is a pedestrian bridge, and the first one to be made of steel.
Take a walk with family or friends or as a couple and admire the delightful views of the Seine and its monuments. The Pont des Arts is a favourite spot for photos.
The famous "love padlocks" which contributed to the bridge’s international reputation have been replaced by panels where artists can express themselves.
